A brief guide to the differences between composite and timber decking....

Decking is currently going through a renaissance and is being incorporated into many garden designs. As a relatively inexpensive and easy way to create an outside entertaining area, decking is a winner!
When decking first became popular in the 1990’s, there was really only one choice of deck, treated softwood and that was it. Since then there has been a revolution in the forms that decking can take, giving the customer a huge range of choice in materials, patterns, colours and price.

Composite
With all the low maintenance and durability benefits, composite decking is becoming increasingly popular. Manufactured using recycled plastic and sawdust giving it excellent environmental credentials, we are now approved stockists for Composite Prime, a fantastic composite decking product which comes in a choice of ranges and colours from the premium HD Deck Pro and HD Deck Dual to the more affordable HD Deck 3D. Composite Prime comes with a guarantee for commercial and residential use. tHe advantages of composite decking are that it will last a long time, never needs oiling or painting and is easy to install with its own fixing system.

Timber
Traditional softwood treated decking is still extremely popular. It is a natural product that looks great and when properly maintained it is long lasting. Maintenance is probably more onerous than composite but timber can be stained or painted to a colour of your choice or just left to weather to a natural silvery grey. It is easy to work with and can be installed using a variety of fixings, all of which are good value for money. We stock a green treated grooved board measuring 27mm x 120mm which is available in a variety of lengths. It is FSC certified and therefore comes from sustainable forests so has great environmental credentials, and of course the boards can always be recycled at the end of their lifespan. Timber decking boards represent excellent value for money.

Alternatives
But traditional decking is not the only timber material available, we are seeing an increase in customers and garden designers specifying a range of timber species from durable softwoods such as siberian larch. There are also a number of modified timber products that have entered the market like Accoya, Lignia and Frake
So, to conclude there is no clear winner between composite v timber, both have their advantages and It depends on your requirements, preferences and budget.
